England midfielder Kalvin Phillips says his whole family, partilcuarly his mum, were annoyed at his treatment by Pep Guardiola while at Manchester City.
The 28-year-old joined City from Leeds back in 2022 in a £42m deal, but things did not work out at the Etihad Stadium, with Phillips totalling just 380 Premier League minutes.
Now, Phillips has joined West Ham United on loan as he hopes to book a place in the England squad for this summer’s European Championships in Germany.
Things took a turn for the worse at City when Guardiola called Phillips “overweight” after England’s World Cup campaign.
Speaking to The Guardian, Phillips says Guardiola’s comments massively knocked his confidence and upset his family.
“After the World Cup was probably the toughest, when Pep came out and said I was overweight,” Phillips said.
“I did not disagree with him but obviously I took a big knock on my confidence and how I felt at City. And my family were not happy about it, either. Especially my mum!
“It was just a misunderstanding and I think he was very frustrated with me coming back 1.5kg over my weight target.”
Now playing for The Hammers, Phillips says he feeling “more alive” than he did with City.
“Now I’m here at West Ham and playing, I feel a lot more alive. It’s not starting from scratch, it’s starting afresh,” Phillips said.
“The game wasn’t letting me down but the fact I had nothing to look forward to kind of pushed me away.
“It wasn’t a nightmare at City, it was just stressful.”
