Manchester United are looking to reinforce their defensive midfield position and once again, the name of Amadou Onana is in the focus.
According to FT, in the summer transfer window, Erik ten Hag’s priority DM target was the Belgian international but they did not have the cash to sign the midfielder from Everton.
In the end, the Red Devils hired the services of Moroccan international, Sofyan Amrabat, on loan from Fiorentina.
The news source claim Man Utd have now moved in and opened talks to finally sign Onana from the Toffees as they have the funds to secure one big signing this month.
With Casemiro past his prime and Amrabat not able to settle yet, the Old Trafford club need a rock solid holding midfield star and the 22-year-old Belgian is one of the best play breakers in the Premier League.
Last week, TEAMtalk reported that even Arsenal have inquired about signing Onana from the Merseysiders, who want an enormous fee of around £70m-£90m for their prized asset.
However, Man Utd may have the edge over the gunners to get the 9-capped international for multiple reasons.
As per FT, Everton want to sign Scott McTominay from the 20-time English champions and the deal involving the Scottish star and Onana could be fruitful for all parties.
On the other hand, Arsenal already have two quality defensive midfielders in the squad in the form of Partey and Rice, the latter being the record signing lured for over £100million in the summer.
So, the former Lille ace would face heavy competition for the No.6 role at the Emirates and in all fairness, Rice has been a hit for Arteta, whose midfield is sorted and he mainly needs a goal scorer.
