Aston Villa have now broken a club record of wins in a calendar year following their 2-1 away win against Tottenham Hotspur.

Much to the delight of the fans, Aston Villa have won on the road for the first time since their win over Chelsea in September.

Despite a slow first half, Unai Emery made changes at half time which saw the game completely change in the Villans’ favour.

The home side took the lead through a Giovani Lo Celso wonder goal as he connected on the half volley. Pau Torres brought Villa level on the brink of half time and this put Emery’s side in good stead going into the second 45.

Ollie Watkins scored his sixth goal in seven games midway through the half which proved to be the decisive moment. There were plenty of offside goals throughout the game which kept the score lower than it might have been.

With that being said, Aston Villa have broken a record for games won in a calendar year with over a month remaining.

What record have Aston Villa broken?

It is safe to say that the rise of the club has been superb since Emery came in. Taking the club from 17th to 7th is the crowning achievement but the Villans aren’t slowing down.

At the time of writing, Villa are two points off top spot and sit in the top four, overtaking Tottenham in the process.

As a result of this win, the Villans have beaten a long-standing club Premier League record. Reported by John Townley via Twitter, who said: “Villa have now set a new club record by winning their 22nd Premier match this calendar year. Remarkable!”

The Emery revolution is clear to see with this stat. Under the Spaniard in the year of 2023, to have 22 wins is quite amazing, to say the least.

There have been bumps in the road that is for sure with losses against Leicester City, Arsenal and Newcastle United stung. None more so than that last-minute Jorginho moment against the Gunners which cut very deep at the time. Considering that a whole year has nearly passed, the Villans have only lost eight games which is pretty crazy.

The Villa faithful have been blessed with 22 wins and just five draws this season. Winning has become a demand and a mentality in 2023.

Fans all love Emery and you just have to look at these stats and the way the Villans play to understand why.
