PSG 1-0 Girona

Goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga’s late blunder handed Paris St-Germain a win over Girona.

Goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga’s late mistake handed Paris St-Germain a win against Champions League newcomers Girona.

Portuguese left-back Nuno Mendes fired a low shot at Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga from a tight angle, but the keeper made a significant error, allowing the ball to slip through his hands.

PSG appeared to be on the verge of being held to a draw by the resolute and determined defense of Girona before Gazzaniga’s mistake. Girona, making their Champions League debut after finishing third in La Liga last season, remained composed, sitting back and effectively neutralizing PSG’s attack, despite the French side recording 26 shots without any of their players finding the net.

France forward Ousmane Dembele came close to breaking the deadlock with a curling shot that struck the crossbar and later had the ball cleanly tackled away by Ladislav Krejci as he advanced towards Girona’s goal.

Encouraged by their enthusiastic traveling supporters, Girona defended deep while maintaining effective possession, making it difficult for PSG to find a breakthrough. However, Girona offered little in terms of offensive threat and primarily focused on surviving PSG’s relentless pressure.

Luis Enrique’s team struggled to create clear chances and barely tested Gazzaniga until his late blunder allowed PSG to snatch victory.

Girona will face Feyenoord in their next Champions League fixture on Wednesday, October 2, while PSG will travel to Arsenal on Tuesday, October 1.
