Luis Suárez is ready to start playing with his old pals again.

Per reports from the Miami Herald and The Athletic, the Uruguay star is finalizing a one-year contract to join Inter Miami, which would reunite him with former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba.

According to the reports, Suárez — who will turn 37 next month — has yet to agree to a salary or sign a formal contract over a move the man himself once called “impossible.” Suárez’s current employer, Grêmio, faces one last match this season, traveling to face Fluminense on Wednesday. On Saturday, Suárez bid a tearful farewell to Grêmio fans after the club’s final home game of 2023.

Once Suárez officially leaves the Brazilian side, the details of his Miami contract should come into focus. The Herons have three Designated Players on the books already, with Messi, Busquets, and Brazilian defensive midfielder Gregore holding those spots.

There have been rumors that MLS could expand the number of DP spots available to clubs by one, but it is also possible that Miami could use Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) to lower the salary cap hit of Suárez or Gregore below the DP threshold.

In October, Miami told striker Josef Martínez that he was not in the club’s plans, a move thought to be made to clear the deck for a move for Suárez. The club still has Ecuador forward Leo Campana on the books.

Can Suárez stay healthy for one last ride with Miami?

“El Pistolero” played at Barça alongside Messi, Busquets, and Alba for six seasons, winning the 2014-15 Champions League, four La Liga championships, and four Copa del Rey trophies.

That said, Miami’s cadre of aging superstars discovered just how much a grind life in MLS can be. The Herons were unstoppable through the Leagues Cup, but saw both Messi and Alba miss numerous games with nagging injuries. Miami eventually lost the U.S. Open Cup final and missed the MLS playoffs, finishing the year on a seven-game winless run.

Just one day before the reports said Suárez would sign with Miami, he spoke to Uruguayan radio, detailing knee problems that he must overcome on a daily basis to keep playing. However, after a solid 2022 with Nacional in the Uruguayan top flight, Suárez seemed to discover better health, and better form, at Grêmio.

The forward played a whopping 53 games in 2023, scoring 27 times and helping Grêmio to the brink of a place in the next Copa Libertadores.
