Victor Boniface rescued Bayer Leverkusen’s unbeaten start to the season with a goal securing a 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund in a Bundesliga match. Leverkusen, led by coach Xabi Alonso, faced the prospect of their first defeat since May after Julian Ryerson’s early goal for Dortmund. However, Patrik Schick, moments after coming off the bench, set up Boniface in the 79th minute to level the score. The match saw Boniface’s 13th goal of the season but his first in the Bundesliga in almost two months.

Despite a freezing and snowy evening, Dortmund defended for most of the game, with Ryerson scoring in the fifth minute. Leverkusen had not conceded the opening goal since September, the only other time they dropped points this season. Leverkusen had won all 14 of its games in all competitions since then. Although Leverkusen celebrated leveling the score with a goal from Florian Wirtz just before halftime, it was disallowed due to a tight offside involving Boniface’s heel earlier in the move.

Leverkusen dominated the game, finishing with 22 shots to Dortmund’s six, and 16 corners to Dortmund’s one. Coach Alonso expressed his belief that his team did enough to win, acknowledging that a point isn’t bad but could be better. Leverkusen maintains its position at the top of the Bundesliga, three points ahead of Bayern Munich, although Bayern has an extra game to play. Dortmund sits in fifth place and is 10 points behind Leverkusen after 13 games.

In another Bundesliga match, Augsburg won 2-1 against Eintracht Frankfurt in the snow. Augsburg, despite missing a penalty and having a goal ruled out on video review, secured the victory with goals from Fredrik Jensen and Iago, while Finn Dahmen’s own goal gave Frankfurt hope of a comeback. Augsburg fans and staff worked to clear snow from the stands ahead of the game. Additionally, Freiburg claimed a 1-0 win over Mainz, with Michael Gregoritsch scoring the decisive goal.
