Footballer Ravel Morrison has been found guilty of fraud for using a deceased person’s blue badge to park, according to Manchester City Council. Morrison admitted to purchasing the badge for £50 from someone in Old Trafford during a cautionary interview.
The 30-year-old from Westbrook, Warrington, faced one count of fraud and pled guilty at Manchester Magistrates’ Court, receiving a £1,000 fine. He was also ordered to pay £508 in costs and a victim surcharge of £400.
The incident occurred on May 22 when enforcement officers examined a white Audi S3 parked on Bridgewater Street, Manchester, displaying a blue badge intended for individuals with disabilities or health conditions.
Upon inspection, the badge was found to be invalid, belonging to someone who passed away in February 2022. The Audi received a fine and was impounded, but Morrison retrieved it later that day.
A Manchester City Council spokesperson emphasized that the law applies to everyone, without exceptions, commending the diligent work of investigating officers and legal counsel in successfully prosecuting the case.
The spokesperson stated that officers regularly patrol streets to ensure the legitimate use of blue badges, vowing to take action against those attempting to circumvent the law.
Morrison, who has played international football for Jamaica and has had club stints with West Ham, Birmingham, and Sheffield United, began his career at Manchester United alongside Wayne Rooney.
He later played under Rooney’s management at Derby and the U.S. club DC United. Morrison has been approached for comment by the Press Association news agency.
