Supporters are criticizing the disturbance among fans during the West Brom versus Wolves match.
A mother explained how fans rushed towards her and her children when disturbances erupted during the local rivalry FA cup match between West Brom and Wolves. This derby, the first with fans in 12 years, was halted for 38 minutes due to chaos at the Hawthorns on Sunday.
Objects were thrown, fights broke out, and spectators spilled onto the field, leading to six arrests by the police. Clare Sidaway, a West Brom supporter attending the game with her daughter and disabled son, recounted how the chaos unfolded, with people running in all directions, causing panic and difficulty in escaping the situation, particularly for her son in a wheelchair.
The trouble began when a Wolves fan, seated among home supporters, celebrated their team’s second goal in the 78th minute. Suzanne Waterhouse, a Wolves fan present with her son, observed the tension escalating throughout the match and labeled the subsequent events as “absolutely idiotic and stupid.”
Another Wolves supporter, Jez Constantinou, who was at the opposite end of the stadium from where the trouble started, witnessed the situation intensifying and noted the presence of Wolves fans within the home section. He described riot police pushing back West Brom fans attempting to enter the field.
Reflecting on the incident, a spectator expressed sadness at the disruptive behavior, emphasizing that it overshadowed the essence of football and tainted the experience for everyone involved.
A representative for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stated that individuals accountable for the disturbances should be prosecuted criminally.
“There is no tolerance for such conduct in football. The prime minister holds the view that everyone should enjoy watching their team without fear of violence or antisocial actions,” the spokesperson emphasized.
West Midlands Police verified that four West Brom fans and two Wolves supporters were apprehended, all of whom were subsequently released pending further investigation.
Among those detained was a man suspected of using a corner flag as a weapon and another accused of assaulting police officers, the police department noted.
Additionally, one individual was hospitalized due to head injuries.
Before the match was halted, flares were ignited within the stadium, and a beer bottle was hurled towards a Wolves player, along with additional objects being thrown onto the field.
During the suspension, certain West Brom players ventured into the stands to escort their children to safety.
Subsequently, their manager, Carlos Corberan, assured that none of his players’ family members suffered any harm.
A representative for West Bromwich Albion expressed the club’s strong condemnation of the incidents, stating they would collaborate with law enforcement and the Football Association (FA) in conducting an investigation. They also confirmed that anyone found to be involved would face a ban from the club.
The Professional Footballers’ Association stated that they had contacted the players involved and emphasized that players should be able to focus on their job without concerns about their families’ safety.
Statistics released in September indicated a significant rise in arrests at football matches in England and Wales, reaching the highest level in nine years. There were 2,264 football-related arrests during the 2022-23 season, marking an increase of 66 from the previous season and the highest number since 2013-14.
Despite the anticipation and excitement surrounding the event, the behavior witnessed during the first Black Country derby with spectators in 12 years was deeply disappointing. The scenes in the Birmingham Road and Halford’s Lane stands were particularly disgraceful.
