Former Nigerian international, Andrew Aikhoumogbe has called for a stiffer competition for Super Eagles goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Recall that Uzoho has come under heavy criticisms after making series of blunders in games that he was in the goal post.

The three-time Africa Cup of Nations winners came from behind to draw 1-1 with minnows Lesotho in Uyo last month.

In their second group C game against Zimbabwe in Rwanda, the Eagles also settled for a 1-1 draw with Uzoho conceding a free-kick from range.

He was blamed for the 2-2 draw against Saudi Arabia in October after he parried a free-kick into his own net.

However, in a chat with Completesports.com[, Aikhoumogbe stated that there should be serious competition in the goalkeeping department so that Uzoho will be kept on his toes.

“For me, I really think the Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro should leave the goalkeeper position open for other goalkeepers in a bid to see the quality that they possess.

“Yes, Uzoho has made some great saves for the Super Eagles but his recent errors should give the coach a sleepless night considering the fact that the 2023 AFCON tournament is just around the corner.

“This idea of sticking with one goalkeeper when he keeps making mistakes does not go down well with me. This is the time for the technical crew to give other goalkeepers a chance to prove their worth.

“We need to amend this mistakes before the tournament proper in January so that the Super Eagles can fly high in Ivory Coast.”
